Libyan government forces in Al-Wefaq announced Saturday the neutralization of 70 members of Major General Khalifa Hifter’s retired forces, between one dead and one wounded, with air strikes on and around Al-Wattia air base.
“The Air Force carried out 6 attacks on Friday, in and around Al-Wattia Air Base, and the means to supply it, during which it targeted Haftar’s military vehicles,” said al-Wefaq spokesman, Muhammad Qanunu, in a brief statement posted by Operation Anger Volcano media center via Facebook.
He noted that as a result of these attacks, “it neutralized 70 members of the Haftar terrorist militia between one dead and one wounded.”
The Al-Wattayah base is considered the largest military base in the region from the west of the capital Tripoli to the Tunisian border, and was controlled by militias loyal to Haftar 6 years ago, and made it a center for command western operations, and a point to mobilize forces from eastern Libya, and is also used to bombard a number of areas in Tripoli.
Government forces continue to besiege the Al-Watiyah base, following the murder of its protection chief, Osama Msek, last Tuesday during the release process.
On Friday, Al-Wefaq forces announced the surrender of six Haftar staff members at the Al-Wattia base.
On Thursday, Al-Wefaq forces announced that their plane launched 12 airstrikes in 24 hours, targeting the positions of Haftar’s forces and fuel trucks, in the country’s western region.
Since April 4, 2019, Haftar’s forces, backed by regional and European countries, have carried out a deadly attack to seize the capital, Tripoli (west), the seat of the internationally recognized legitimate government.
