Jimmy Carragher, the Liverpool defender legend, confirmed that the statements of the Egyptian international Mohamed Salah, the star of the team, about Barcelona and Real Madrid, were only a message addressed to the management of the English club.

Salah had opened the door to a future transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid in an interview with the Spanish newspaper “AS”, to raise speculation in recent times about his fate with the Reds.

Carragher said in his article in the English newspaper “Daily Telegraph” on Friday: “The timing of these statements is also strange, I think it was a message to Liverpool management to renew his contract with a new profitable business for him.”

He added: “Seeing the team’s players attracting the attention of Spanish La Liga clubs would have worried the club five years ago, but not now.”

He continued: “I am not convinced of the ability of Real Madrid and Barcelona to bear the costs of the Salah deal, especially since investing more than £ 125m in a player who will turn 29 this summer is not a good thing.

He continued: “Mohamed Salah should stay at Anfield, he could be an integral part of Liverpool’s future and raise his stature to challenge Ian Rush in the end as the club’s best scorer.”

He explained: “I know how controversial it sounds, Mohamed Salah may be one of the best Liverpool players in the club’s history.”

Carragher said: “Salah is loved by the fans, he is truly a club legend, and when fans can enter Anfield, you just have to hear his name chanting from the (Copa) stands to know how much he appreciates him.”
