World-famous photographer Jimmy Nelson, known for his portraits of indigenous tribesmen, visited the islands twice and captured a series of jaw-dropping images that reveal another world, as we see in the movies.
Marquesas is one of the most remote islands in the world. The islands are located in the South Pacific Ocean, more than 800 miles from the tourist destination of Tahiti, and are still inhabited only by indigenous tribal settlers.
The islands are located in the central Pacific Ocean, 1,400 kilometers (880 miles) from the closest popular tourist destination in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
The stunning photos, taken by international photographer Jimmy Nelson, show what life is like on the islands, which has become one of the best-kept secrets in the world.
The group consists of 12 islands, of which only 6 are inhabited by residents. Jimmy’s impressive images reveal panoramic views of the group of 12 islands, with its green mountainous landscapes reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous adventure novel “Treasure Island “.
In one photo, a member of the tribe wears full traditional indigenous clothing, which is usually worn on special occasions such as weddings.
As if they came out of a fictional adventure movie, so many Tribe members in the Marquesas are covered in tribal tattoos, similar to the modern tattoos we know of, drawn from those isolated islands.
Jimmy says the islanders have retained a rich sense of heritage, roaming their islands primarily on horseback.
He explained: “It is a beautiful part of the world and it is still relatively isolated from the developed world.” Jimmy, 53, is known for his photos of tribal and indigenous peoples, having visited the Marquesas Islands twice so far.
