Libyan and human rights circles were shocked by the news of the murder of prominent lawyer and activist Hanan Al-Barasi, who was shot dead on Tuesday in broad daylight, in the middle of one of the largest streets in the city of Benghazi, in eastern Libya.
Al-Barassi, 46, was known for her audacity and outspoken criticism of rapes by militias in her city, as well as for her support for women’s issues and her constant talk about attacks on women. women in eastern Libya.
Shortly before the assassination, Al-Barasy had posted a live video clip on his Facebook page, in which he criticized armed groups close to the military commander, Khalifa Haftar.
She also mentioned that she is “threatened” and told the stories of the women who were attacked, and asked the authorities to hold those involved responsible.
The lawyer went to the cemetery the same day.
The scenes of his funeral were reported on social media sites, especially the headstone on which was written “martyr of the word of truth.”
The murder of Hanan Al-Barasi provoked many condemnatory reactions and demanded “justice”. Twitter users expressed their anger and concern over the “repeated crimes committed against activists.”
Tweeters also linked Al-Barasi’s assassination and his earlier statements in which he criticized the leader’s son, Khalifa Haftar, Saddam, for having obtained a leadership position in the army despite his young age, calling for equality.
Amnesty International condemned the murder of lawyer Al-Barasi and called for an investigation.
And he considered his murder to be “proof of the risks faced by women in Libya who speak about political issues.”
The organization added that Al-Barassi “has criticized several people associated with armed groups” in eastern Libya and “has received various threats, including threats to kill her and her daughter, in the context of these criticisms.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya also condemned the murder of Hanan Al-Barasi and called on the authorities “to put an end to the prevailing situation characterized by impunity.”
The murder occurred about a year and a half after the disappearance of Representative Siham Sergiwa, who was abducted by an armed group in Benghazi after she criticized the attack launched by leader Haftar in Tripoli, and has not been found since.
