The director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed on Monday that the number of new cases of the emerging virus “Corona” has reached its highest level in recent days since the outbreak of the epidemic worldwide. , warning against reliance on so-called “herd immunity”.

Ghebreyesus said, in statements published by the World Health Organization on its website: “Each of the last four days has witnessed the largest number of cases recorded so far,” adding: “All over the world, we are now seeing an increase in the number of registered Covid-19 cases, especially in Europe and the Americas. ».

The UN official cautioned against discussing access to herd immunity by allowing the virus to spread, emphasizing that herd immunity is only achieved by protecting people from the virus and not exposing them to the virus.

He added: “In the history of public health, immunity to distancing has never been used as a strategy to respond to an outbreak, much less a pandemic. It is scientifically and morally problematic.”
