Sarkozy has been under investigation for years.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is facing official charges related to allegations that his 2007 election campaign received illegal Libyan funding.
Sarkozy, who denies any wrongdoing, is accused of being involved in a “criminal conspiracy”, which may result in the case being referred to court.
French prosecutors believe Sarkozy and his associates received millions of euros from the regime of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to help him finance his election campaign.
Sarkozy said in a post on his Facebook page on Friday that his “innocence has been tainted by the charges against him” without the slightest evidence.
He added that he answered all the questions without the slightest difficulty.
Last month, a French appeals court rejected a request to drop the charges against Sarkozy.
The 65-year-old former president denies allegations raised by investigative journalism website Mediapart in 2012, when he published a document alleging that Gaddafi had agreed to make up to € 50 million available to Sarkozy.
Sarkozy, in his defense, said that there is no legal basis in France to prosecute a person for embezzlement of funds belonging to another country.
The judges are also investigating allegations by a French businessman of Lebanese origin that he brought bags of funds containing 5 million euros from Gaddafi to an official close to Sarkozy in 2006 and 2007, according to AFP.
Prosecutors believe they can show that Libya financed Sarkozy’s election campaign.
Two years ago, Sarkozy was also accused of participating in acts of corruption and obtaining funding for his illegal campaign. But the former president insists that he has done nothing wrong.
