In a new escalation between Washington and Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry summoned the US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mike Raynor, on Saturday, in the context of recent remarks by President Donald Trump on the Renaissance Dam.

According to a statement issued by the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, the American diplomat was summoned for clarification on Trump’s statements during a phone call with Sudan’s Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, and Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump accused Ethiopia of violating an agreement to end the Renaissance dam crisis with Egypt and Sudan.

The US president said Washington cut millions of dollars in aid to Addis Ababa because of its stalemate in the dam negotiations, which have been in place for nearly a decade with Egypt and Sudan.

In a phone call with the leaders of Sudan and Israel to celebrate a diplomatic breakthrough between the two countries, Trump emphasized: “Egypt cannot be blamed for feeling a bit upset about the dam, which” stops the flow of water to the Nile. ” .

He described the situation as “very dangerous” and added: “They (the Egyptians) will end up blowing up the dam. They will blow up the dam. We have to do something.”

Today, Saturday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated his assurance that construction of what he described as the “Ethiopian Dam” will continue.

He stressed that “Ethiopians will inevitably complete this work, and there is no force that can prevent us from achieving our goals that we have planned, and no one colonized us before, and no one will rule us in the future.”
