Atlético de Madrid beat their host Deportivo Alavés by two goals to one at the Mendizorroza Stadium on matchday 17 of the Spanish League.
Atlético de Madrid’s goals were scored by Marcos Llorente and Luis Suárez, while Filby mistakenly scored the only goal for Alavés.
Athletic and Madrid regained the top of the Spanish league after climbing to 38 points in 15 games, two points behind Real Madrid, which played 17 games.
Alavés remained at 18 points, 13th of 17 games.
Atlético de Madrid’s victory was achieved by two players who were voluntarily abandoned by Real Madrid and Barcelona, or rather they were exiled, so Diego Simeone decided to compete with them for the league championship.
The first half was quiet without any real and explicit chances, but Atlético de Madrid managed to finish the lead with a goal from Llorente in 41 ‘, with a left-footed shot from outside the area, which hit the defense and made its way towards the net.
The second half was fiery, especially after Diego Simeone, coach of the Atlético duo, Joao Félix and Saúl Niguez, had to try to kill the game.
Alavés’s situation was complicated in the 63rd minute, when defender Víctor LaGuardia crashed into Thomas Lemar’s right hand on his shot towards the goal, to get the yellow card.
But the referee reviewed the technique of the video and changed his decision, taking the red card, leaving La Guardia fired and leaving his team with ten players.
Then Atlético pressed hard to score a second goal, for which Suárez missed a confirmed second goal in the 70th minute after a silk pass from Yannick Carrasco.
Lemar’s turn came in the 75th minute, with a direct free kick from close range, which was saved by Fernando Pacheco with great difficulty.
Alavés’ first real attacking appearance waited until the 80th minute, when Frenchman Florian Lejeune lifted and fired a header that hit the post and then Jan Oblak’s body and headed for the corner kick.
Then Alavés got the bonus in the 84th minute with a cross from Joselo, which Felipe failed to disperse adequately, to put it curiously into his own net, setting up a draw for the hosts.
But Atlético de Madrid managed to snatch a valuable and exciting victory in the last minute from Luis Suárez, who deposited Felix’s pass into the empty net, snatching all three points.
Suárez raised his account to 9 goals as the top scorer in the Spanish League, equally with Yago Aspas and Gerard Moreno.
