Egyptian Mayar Sharif expressed her joy at the support given to her by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah during her career at the Roland Garros tennis tournament.

Mayar Sharif achieved a great achievement and became the first Egyptian in history to achieve the leading role in a Grand Slam tournament in tennis.

“It is very nice to receive this support from a very special person in Egypt,” Mayar Sherif said on the tournament’s official website, commenting on Salah’s support.

He added: “Salah is a unique person. He made me feel like there was an important person following me. I thank God for that.”

And he continued: “For me it is special that people know me, that they realize the effort I am making and that I am doing something different, that constitutes mental support.”

She added: “It is not easy to leave your homeland and venture to be one of the best players in the world without the sport of your country being the best.”

“So you’re trying to believe in yourself, forge your path and work really hard, and he did it fast and now he’s one of the best footballers in the world.”

She explained: “He did not go to the top and retired, but continues at the same level, this is incredible.”

Ranked 172nd in the world, he traveled to complete his studies in the United States and played tennis, earning a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University.

On that, Mayar says: “I have a wonderful feeling. I feel that I have taken the right path, because many people said that going to university in the United States was a mistake.”

He added: “I started last year at the age of 23, but I have many years to play tennis so I am in no rush.”

And he continued: “Even if I do not achieve success now, I will be patient for the next two, three, four or five years. I realize that I have the level and this is the most important.”

The 24-year-old Egyptian player received some advice from Tunisian Ons Jaber and her coach Essam Jalali, before facing American Katie McNally in the Roland Garros tie.

Ons Jaber is a former Roland Garros junior champion and is ranked 30th in the world.

“Frankly, I don’t think Mayar needed our advice,” says Onass Jaber. “She played very well and I am very happy for her.”

“I am very happy to have two Arab players in the lead role at Roland Garros,” he added. “I hope we make a good impression at the tournament together.”

Mayar Sharif will play Czech second-seeded Karolina Pliskova next Monday in the first main round at Roland Garros.

Roland Garros matches are broadcast on beIN Sports 9.10.
