Atlético de Madrid returned to victories, defeating their guest Elche 3-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on matchday 14 of the Spanish League.
Luis Suárez scored two goals, while the return Diego Costa added the third, while Lucas Puet scored the only goal for Elche.
Atlético de Madrid climbs to 29 points in 12 games at the top of the table, 3 points ahead of Real Sociedad, which played 14 games, and 3 points for Real Madrid, which played 13 games.
Meanwhile, Elche stayed at 14 points in 15th place, after completing 7 rounds without any victory.
Elche’s knot was confirmed, since he had never won at Atlético de Madrid in 27 games, this happened in the old Metropolitano stadium, the Vicente Calderón stadium and the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
In the match, the Atlético de Madrid captain achieved his 280th victory with the rojiblancos, to become the most victorious player in the history of the capital club, beating Adelardo.
For his part, Suárez played his 200th game in the Spanish League, and it took 41 minutes to celebrate that number when he opened the scoring after the center of Kieran Trippier.
Suárez reached 150 goals in his La Liga career, and is the 22nd player to score this number of goals in the Spanish League and the eighth overseas.
In the second half, Suárez confirmed Atlético’s victory with a second goal after a cross by Yannick Carrasco in the 58th minute, to raise his account to 7 goals in the top scorers this season, in equal parts with Yago Aspas and Mikel Uyarzabal .
The game temporarily heated up in the 64th minute, when Pueh cut the lead with a header that hit Jan Oblak’s net.
But substitute Diego Costa, recovering from an injury, won a penalty – a controversial one – and deposited it himself in the 80th minute.
The 81st minute featured the participation of Nino (40 years old), the Elche striker who, by chance, had scored in Elche’s last victory over Atlético in March 2002, when the two teams were in the Second Division.
This time, however, Nino failed to repeat the 2002 double, when Elche fell to Atlético, recovering from losing the Madrid derby a week ago.
