Southampton players celebrate Armstrong’s goal at Newcastle
Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhotel praised the players’ performance after temporarily leading the English Premier League for the first time in 32 years.
Southampton beat Newcastle, 2-0, in the eighth round, at St Mary’s.
The coach said after the end of the game: “It’s amazing what the team does. I congratulate everyone at the club. It’s exciting. Everyone is at the highest level.”
He added on Sky Sports: “What we are doing is a little scary at the time, but to be honest, it is not surprising when I see what we do.”
He added: “I told the players in the locker room that we should benefit a lot together. We have taken many steps forward. We are now a strong team, and this is not by chance.”
He praised the attacking duo, “Theo brings us speed, Che Adams is efficient in the penalty area, it was great to show our potential in the absence of Danny Ings who has scoring quality.”
He concluded: “Theo’s performance was excellent, but the end of the attacks was not good, but what he offers us is wonderful.”
Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong scored Southampton’s goal in the game in the absence of Danny, the team’s top scorer, from an injury that would keep him out of action for a month or month and a half.
The victory lifted Southampton’s balance to 16th point, temporarily climbing to the top of the league standings, while Newcastle’s balance froze at 11th point at 11th place.
