Wim Kift, the former Dutch striker, criticized fellow Liverpool defender Virgil van Dyck, accusing him of laziness and arrogance.
“It is not decisive. He plays with the Netherlands and Liverpool as if he were the only star, the great leader,” said Kiefet, who scored the Netherlands’ goal against Egypt at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, in his interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
“At the same time, he is lazy and indifferent. He makes mistakes and escapes many situations that he has to face. A player like him must be at the forefront of the battle,” adapted the crowned Euro 1988.
“Van Dyck took a long time to reach a world level. It lasted for two seasons, but he must continue in the same way. The environment around him plays a big role in that. It’s okay if his coaches stress him a bit.”
The 29-year-old Van Dyck was criticized for his mistakes against Leeds United in a 4-3 match that Liverpool hard-won in the first round of the Premier League.
Van Dyck shone with Liverpool since joining the team in January 2018, and last year he came second behind Lionel Messi in the world’s best player award.
