Thierry Henry defended his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, in the context of the images that circulated of the latter in the Dynamo Kiev match.
The cameras had captured Messi walking down the field without putting pressure on his opponent in the final moments of the match in the third round of the Champions League, which his team narrowly won 2-1.
“When I see that people are still looking for Messi for whatever reason, I laugh. I laugh because people forget that he went last month to play for Ecuador and Bolivia,” Henry said on CBS Sports.
“Nobody takes that into account,” added the Montreal Impact technical director. “It is difficult to take a 12-hour flight, and in Bolivia it is difficult to even walk.”
He continued: “It is true that he can be tired in a game, so what? We are talking about a boy who scored more goals than the number of games he played. People forget that we are not machines.”
He continued: “In El Clásico, he supported defensively on the corner flag on 5 or 6 occasions, but these shots are not starters, and I don’t understand it.”
He continued: “If you want to make some things, there is a person you should stay away from. Leave him alone, because we will cry when his time in the stadiums is up.”
He added: “I understand you want to make a profit and create some stories and reports, but not with this guy. I played with Leo and believe me, this is not the person you want to attack.”
“Nobody has done what Messi offered to football, so I don’t understand when people question his desire, this is what bothers me,” he said.
He admitted: “It happened to me during my playing sessions that I was also walking in the stadium. This was not due to lack of desire, but because I was exhausted and my mind could not emit a reaction. This is possible.”
And he exclaimed: “But question Lionel Messi’s motive? Really ?! This is ridiculous. I’m surprised to hear that, do you doubt his wish? He’s an animal that provides critical passes all the time.”
He concluded: “It’s simple for me, they just enjoyed it while he was in the stadiums, and they stopped complaining about things he doesn’t do.”
