Omar Al-Abdalawi, a Turkish player for Galatasaray, suffered a serious accident at home last night while celebrating New Year’s Day.
Al-Abdalawi suffered burns after the explosion of fireworks, which he used to celebrate the New Year.
Al-Abdalawi suffered burns to both hands, as well as a serious injury to his eye, and was immediately taken to hospital.
Turkish reports indicated that the player’s life is not in danger, but doctors are working to ensure that he does not lose his sight.
The Galatasaray Club stated in its statement:
“Our player Omar Al-Abdalawi was transferred to Liv Hospital tonight. Unfortunately, he was injured in a domestic accident and was hospitalized. The severity of his injury will be announced later. We hope that our player will recover as soon as possible.”
And they were in the hospital with the player since last night: Abd al-Rahim al-Bayrak, vice president of the club, Fateh Tarim, the coach, and Arada Turan, the team captain.
For his part, the doctor who supervised the treatment of the Norwegian right-back stated: “He arrived at the hospital around 12 in the morning, with burns on both hands and a wound to his eye.”
“We did the necessary checks and called the plastic surgeon and the ophthalmology team to supervise him.”
“He is currently in his room and his condition is stable compared to last night, but he will need surgical intervention. We have not yet decided what we will do in his eye, tomorrow we will evaluate the situation again.”
“He can see, but it would be too quick to say anything about the future.”
“I cannot determine the percentage of his vision that he will possess. He has a thermal chemical burn. We have performed a cleaning operation and completed the necessary medical procedures.”
Al-Abdalawi had contracted the Corona virus before, with his country, Norway, causing him to be absent from several games for Galatasaray.
Al-Abdalawi, 29, is a Norwegian player of Moroccan origin, who has played for Galata Saray since the beginning of this season, after moving to him from Olympiacos, Greece.
Al-Abdalawi previously played for Manchester City, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Eintracht Braunschweig and Hull City.
