Dia El-Sayed, Al-Ahly’s coach and a former Egypt team, responded to comments. Former Red Genie coach Joe Bonfrear on the causes of the league loss for the 2002-2003 season.

The Dutch coach who led Al-Ahly that season claimed that the highest instructions came to the team to lose the championship in the last 3 rounds to Zamalek. (Look what he said)

“I confirm that this statement is not true at all,” said Diaa El-Sayed, who was a member of Al-Ahly’s technical staff at the time.

“I don’t know why Bonfrere said this statement incorrect,” he added in his comments through FilGoal.com. “If it really happened, why did you keep quiet about it for so long and remember it now after 17 years?”

He continued: “We lost the league due to poor Tawfiq Gharib that we found in an interview with Enppi.”

“We missed many easy opportunities, like Gilberto and Muhammad Fadl, as well as Ahmed Bilal, the team’s top scorer, was injured,” he said.

He continued his speech saying: “There was only one opportunity for Enppi and Sayed Abdel Naeem and then he managed to record it.”

“What Bonferrer said is totally wrong,” he said.

Issam El-Hadary, Al-Ahly’s guard at the time, also denounced Bonfrear’s statements. (Details)

Meanwhile, former Zamalek boss Kamal Darwish responded more violently to the statements of the former Al-Ahly coach. (See details)

Al-Ahly needed a goal to force Zamalek into a tiebreaker, and two goals to crown the league, but lost in the last round to Enppi to lose the title to his traditional rivals.
