Karim Benzema of Real Madrid won the “Alfredo Di Stefano” award as the best player in the Spanish League for the 2019/2020 season.
The award is presented by the Spanish newspaper Marca, and the winner is chosen by public vote.
Benzema ended the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, which had lasted 11 seasons in a row.
The award started the 2007/08 season and was crowned by Raúl González at the expense of Sergio Agüero and Iker Casillas.
But then Messi won the award 7 times, while Ronaldo won 4 times, before the dominance at the hands of Benzema ended.
Benzema starred last season and led Real Madrid to the league title, scoring 21 goals in 37 games, in addition to scoring 8 goals, to finish second in the scoring career behind the legendary Messi.
“The award means a lot to me,” Benzema said upon receiving the award. “I am proud and happy. This is the product of the work at the club that has been running since 2009, and I am very satisfied with what they presented.”
He continued: “I was at Real Madrid for many years and I will always work to help the team.”
He continued: “Ronaldo and Messi are two players of a different level, who won many individual awards, and I am proud to win this award after them.”
“I would dedicate this award to many of my teammates, Sergio Ramos, for example, after he presented a great season. I don’t look at the players of other teams, I only worry about my teammates ”.
The award is named after Di Stefano, Real Madrid legend of the 50s and 60s, and one of the most successful and important players in the history of the Spanish League.
