Swiss President Gianni Infantino of FIFA has expressed concern about the successive postponements of the qualifiers for the final phase of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, due to the Corona pandemic.
“I feel anxious and of course it is a real problem, especially if the epidemic does not stop or recede. The ball is now in the court of the health authorities,” Infantino told reporters after a FIFA conference.
Infantino explained that FIFA has decided to hold an additional period of international matches in January 2022, and will look for more, which may enrage European clubs, who will have to leave their players out of patriotic duty.
He said one of the alternatives is to play three games instead of two during the international period, or to play the playoffs in a stadium instead of the games on the court and outside.
He added that holding the 2022 World Cup in November and December in Qatar would give FIFA a chance to take a breather.
Doubts surround the start of the South American qualifiers, which were scheduled for March, before next month, while the start of the CONCACAF qualifiers, which were scheduled for this month, was postponed to next March.
