Facebook has removed dozens of accounts, pages and groups, as well as accounts on its Instagram app, targeting Manchester City and is distorting its reputation.
And Facebook took that step, as those accounts violate its policy “against foreign or government interference,” according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail.”
This move highlights the stage some may go to discredit their competitors, as false stories have been continually posted against Premier League champions.
A Facebook report on “dishonest and coordinated behavior” on its platforms mentioned the details of those pages and the accounts it removed.
The report is released monthly, to explain the campaigns that are being phased out, as they are meant to spread rumors and lies.
Most of the deleted accounts were based in India, where such activities are often used to promote fake news, given the large number of people trained in the field of information technology.
Although the campaign targeting Manchester City was launched from India, it has simultaneously published stories promoting Qatar and praising the events taking place there.
In a parallel report, Graphika, who worked with Facebook, provided details of what she described as “robotic programs” that published pro-Qatar objects.
These programs are software applications that perform automated tasks over the Internet, which have been found to have been used to try to influence the global political agenda and elections.
