Debris from a Boeing 777 aircraft fell on a residential area near Denver, Colorado.
The right wing engine of the plane fired after takeoff from the Denver airport.
The pilot of the plane, which carries 231 passengers in addition to ten crew members, was able to return and land safely at the takeoff airport, without sustaining injuries.
Broomfield County Police in Colorado posted photos of what appears to be the front end of a motor tire in the front yard of a home.
The plane, belonging to United Airlines, was bound for Honolulu, in the US state of Hawaii.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Flight 328 experienced a right wing engine failure.
Broomfield Police urged residents of the area where the debris fell to keep the debris intact. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board must investigate the accident.
Images posted online showed smoke coming from the engine. In a video clip that appears to have been taken from inside the plane, the engine appears to have caught fire and its frame fell off.
The accident occurred shortly after 8:00 pm GMT.
