British Health Minister Matt Hancock told members of Parliament that a new version of the Corona virus had been detected in areas of England and that at least 60 local authorities had recorded infections.
He added that the World Health Organization has been informed of the new development and that British scientists are conducting detailed studies on it.
He said there is no evidence that the new version of the virus causes more severe symptoms or that vaccines do not work for them.
The minister told Parliament that last week there was a sharp increase in the number of cases in London, Kent and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire.
He said 1,000 cases of the new version of the virus were recorded in southern England and similar infections were detected in 60 local areas.
He added that it is not known if this was related to the increase in contagion cases, but in all cases it is necessary to take quick measures to control the deadly epidemic as vaccination operations progress.
Professor Alan McNally, an expert at the University of Birmingham, said UK labs had discovered the new version in recent weeks.
In a statement to the BBC, he said: “Our reactions should not be hysterical as there is no evidence that it is more contagious or more dangerous.”
He added that great efforts are being made to identify the new version and the circumstances of its appearance.
He said it is necessary to remain calm and handle the matter rationally, since such development is common in the world of viruses, and scientists expect new strains to emerge and disappear over time.
Jeremy Ferrar, director of the research funding charity Wellcome, said the situation is dire and it is imperative to remain vigilant, continue research and take the necessary steps to anticipate the evolution of the virus.
