Some artists who participated in the fourth session of the El Gouna Film Festival, which took place on the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt, announced that they had been infected with the Coronavirus.
The festival, which concluded its activities a week ago, featured a series of concerts that were held daily, with the presence of a large number of participants.
Actress Nashwa Mustafa announced that she was infected with the virus through her Facebook account on Tuesday, asking her fans to pray for her and her contacts to perform tests to be calm.
Nashwa had posted an anguish on her Facebook page, saying that her condition was deteriorating and that the treatment protocol was not working for her.
Later, her son revealed on his mother’s Facebook account that the Ministry of Health had transferred his mother to a hospital, and also thanked the Ministry and the Actors Guild for taking action for his mother.
Actress Basma also announced that she was in home isolation a week ago, after her infection was confirmed.
In a call from the BBC team in Cairo, Basma said that he is in good condition and that his symptoms were “mild”.
Basma also announced that it will carry out other follow-up and peace of mind checks. He added that as soon as he found out about his infection, he told his contacts to run checks to calm down.
Actress Zainab Gharib also announced that she was infected with the Coronavirus, through her Instagram account.
Zainab said the test results were positive, calling on those who treated her directly during the recent period to take “the necessary precautions.”
Reem El-Adl, a clothing designer for the Egyptian film and acting sector, said on her Facebook page that she did not show any symptoms of the disease, but that she did take a medical smear and the result was positive.
Reem added that several of his friends were tested and some of them also tested positive.
The Egyptian rapper “Weez” announced, through his account on the Instagram site, that he had been infected with the Corona virus while he was in El Gouna.
He called on those who had mixed with them in recent days to isolate themselves and carry out the necessary tests to ensure their safety.
Criticisms had arisen on social networks for the images that appeared from inside the festival, which indicate a lack of sufficient commitment on the part of many attendees with the precautionary measures to prevent the Corona virus.
The artistic director of the El Gouna Festival, Amir Ramses, told the BBC that the festival management “had a great interest in coordinating with the Ministry of Health” and added that the number of infected cases is “very small” compared to the number of festival goers.
Ramses indicated that the festival management decided to “cancel a number of events” that exceeded the allowed limit in terms of attendance numbers.
Notably, Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Mujahid attended the festival, along with a delegation from the ministry, to follow up on the implementation of precautionary measures to prevent the virus during festival activities.
Mohamed Abdel Rahim, film critic and one of the festival guests, said : “From the beginning, the event organizers announced that the Ministry of Health is an important partner in the festival, which means that it will oversee the implementation of the precautionary measures, which has already happened.”
“The main problem was the concerts organized by the festival fans from the main companies, which were packed with guests, regardless of the precautionary measures,” Abdel-Rahim told the BBC.
Abdel-Rahim stated: “These events were outside the festival and therefore not under the full supervision of the festival or the Ministry of Health.”
This comes at a time when preparations are being made for the celebration of the Cairo International Film Festival in its 42nd session, from December 2 to 10.
The festival date, which was scheduled for November 19, was changed to ensure more health insurance measures to prevent Corona, according to officials.
Mohamed Hefzy, president of the Cairo International Film Festival, told the BBC that the festival’s management will announce the precautionary measures for the festival at a press conference to be held next Sunday.
