The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) dominated Ethiopia’s military and politics for decades, before Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in 2018.

The dispute escalated last September when Tigray held regional elections, challenging the ban on any vote at the national level due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Abe described the vote as illegal.
Clashes broke out on November 4 after the Ethiopian central government accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (PFLT) of attacking a military base to steal weapons.
The TPLF denied the attack.
