The name of Queen Cleopatra has appeared on social media in Egypt amid a wave of controversy, following the announcement of the selection of an Israeli actress to embody the character of the queen in an upcoming historical film.
Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who was known as the heroine of the movie “Supernatural”, had tweeted on the subject, saying that the story of Cleopatra in the new film will be different from previous versions, because it will tell the story of the Queen of Egypt through the eyes of other women, announcing that on the International Day of the Girl.
The news of the film and the choice of the actress were met with widespread criticism and controversy on social media sites. Egyptians denounced Hollywood’s choice of a “foreign” actress who embodies the personality of the Egyptian queen, while others criticize her for being a former Israeli army soldier and her “pro-Zionist” orientation.
While others criticized what they described as “whitewashing” Hollywood of historical figures.
On the other hand, many responded to criticism from some, citing Cleopatra’s Greek origins, noting that despite her dominance of Egypt, her origins were due to Greece.
Who is Cleopatra?
- Cleopatra played an important role in Egyptian history in the 1st century BC, as she was the last to sit on the Egyptian throne of the Ptolemaic family, whose lineage extends to Ptolemy the First, one of the leaders of the armies of Alexander the Macedonian.
- Cleopatra experienced many major political upheavals, beginning with the arrival of the Roman politician and leader Julius Caesar in Egypt, with whom she established a passionate relationship and helped her ascend to the throne of Egypt.
- And after Caesar’s death and the outbreak of civil war in the Roman state, Cleopatra became associated with the Roman politician and leader Marco Antony, and sided with her rival Octavian.
- However, the defeat was made by the armies of Cleopatra and Marco Antonio, so the former would die on the battlefields while the latter would die by suicide and Egypt would become a Roman state.
