Burundi, its head of the World Health Organization office, has expelled, along with presidential election campaigns, in which politicians are organizing large demonstrations despite the health risks of the Corona epidemic.

The government confirmed on Thursday that the Foreign Ministry sent a letter dated May 12 to the head of the WHO office in the country, Walter Kazadi Mulumbo, and to three of his aides ordering them to leave the country before Friday.

Elections are held to elect a successor to President Pierre Nkurunziza, whose government has been repeatedly accused of human rights violations and expelled by other representatives of international organizations on May 20.

Bernard Ntaheraga, assistant minister for foreign affairs, confirmed these WHO officials as “undesirable persons” but did not mention any reason for the expulsion.

Burundi has so far recorded a small number of cases and deaths caused by the virus, as the number of infections reached 27, while one case died.

In 2018, authorities expelled United Nations investigators investigating allegations of human rights violations. The United Nations previously accused members of the security forces and gunmen of the ruling party of committing gang rape, torture and murder.
