American businessman Bill Gates said in an interview with “Fortune” that there is a new level of cooperation between drug manufacturers, allowing them to obtain the long-awaited Corona virus vaccine for an emergency use license in the coming months.
“The possibility is that at least two, three or four vaccines are safe and effective,” he said.
Gates expected the United States to receive a coronavirus vaccine in early 2021, but “how quickly the epidemic ends” will depend on how many people are prepared to receive the vaccine.
He added: “I believe that the Food and Drug Administration will approve a vaccine for coronavirus for use in emergency situations in early 2021.”
And Gates believes it will depend on how many people get the vaccine, and will continue to wear masks in the meantime, to determine how quickly the epidemic, which has killed nearly 200,000 Americans so far, will end.
Gates adds that the crisis has led to other setbacks, including an increase in extreme poverty rates.
According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 170 candidate vaccines for the Corona virus in various stages of development around the world.
There are currently at least nine in large-scale human trials to show that it is safe and effective.
Gates says there are currently six vaccines that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation believes are likely to produce positive results in Phase III trials, and he is seeking permission from the Food and Drug Administration.
The next hurdle will be increasing production so that hundreds of millions of doses are ready for distribution. “We will face the challenge of raising the level of manufacturing to an unprecedented level,” Gates said.
