Washington – (dpa):
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden came close to victory on Saturday by expanding his advance in the battlefield state of Georgia, and the vote count is still ongoing in several other states.
Biden’s lead over President Donald Trump widened to 7,248 votes on Saturday morning, up from 4,430 a few hours ago, media outlets such as CNN reported, citing U.S. electoral authorities.
By a narrow margin, a recount is almost certain in Georgia, although momentum indicates a recount is likely to confirm Biden’s lead.
If Georgia’s outcome is decided by Biden and he maintains his leadership in Arizona, he will have enough votes to cross the crucial 270 votes in the electoral college and assume the presidency.
The results remain comparable in several states, where important votes are counted by mail.
In Pennsylvania, Democrat Biden received 28,833 more votes than Trump. In Nevada, Biden’s lead increased to 22,657 votes, while his lead decreased slightly to 29,861 votes in Arizona.
And if Biden wins Georgia or Arizona, he will only need one more state to secure enough votes to win the White House, while winning in Pennsylvania would lead directly to the presidency.
Trump made unsubstantiated claims that the vote was rigged. Several election officials, including members of the two main parties, have said bluntly that there is no widespread fraud.
