An American intelligence report revealed that the Saudi Crown Prince, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, approved the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
The report, which was declassified and issued by the Biden administration, says the prince approved a plan to arrest or kill the Saudi journalist living in the United States.
This is the first time the United States has publicly named the crown prince, who denies his connection to the murder.
Khashoggi was killed while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
And he was known for his criticism of the Saudi authorities.
“Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey, to arrest or kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” says the report issued by the CIA director’s office.
Since 2018, the CIA has reportedly believed that the crown prince had ordered the assassination, but US officials have not made any allegations of his involvement public until now.
US President Joe Biden is expected to take a firmer line than his predecessor Donald Trump on human rights and the rule of law in Saudi Arabia, America’s main ally in the Middle East.
