An Israeli ship was exposed to an explosion Thursday night in the Gulf of Oman, as reported by its owner and groups concerned about maritime security, with reference to that there were no injuries.

The London-based “Dryad Global” group, which deals with maritime security, said on its website that “the MV Helios Ray vehicle carrier was exposed to an explosion in the Gulf of Oman.”

According to the group, the ship was apparently heading from Dammam in Saudi Arabia to Singapore when the explosion occurred.

The group noted that “MV Helios Ray is owned by Helios Company Ltd., which is an Israeli company registered on the Isle of Man.”

According to the official Israeli Kan TV, the ship is owned by Rami Ungar, an Israeli businessman.

The owner confirmed that the explosion had caused “two holes with a diameter of approximately one and a half meters.”

He stressed that the explosion did not cause casualties among the ship’s crew, nor did it damage the engine. And the ship arrives on Saturday morning at an Emirati port.

The Marine Traffic website confirmed that the ship was flying the Bahamian flag and left Dammam on Wednesday. It was supposed to arrive in Singapore next week.

“We have no indication” that the explosion was related to tensions between Washington and Tehran, or that the owner of the ship is Israeli.

In turn, the British Maritime Trade Authority stated in a notice on its website that the ship was exposed to an explosion, stating that “investigations are under way.”

According to the group “Dryad”, it is possible that Iran was behind the explosion, pointing out that it comes at a time of intense tension between the Hebrew state and Iran.

According to the group, “while the details of the incident are still unclear, there is a realistic possibility that the event is the result of the activity … of the Iranian military.”

The group said that “tensions between Israel and Iran remain tense, especially in light of the growing signs of rapprochement between Iran and the Biden administration” in the United States.

On the other hand, he added, “Iran is increasingly concerned about the improvement in relations between Israel and the Gulf states.”
