The Jordanian authorities announced that an explosion occurred early Friday in a munitions depot east of the city of Zarqa (25 km east of the capital Amman) in an uninhabited area, without clarifying whether it had caused casualties.

“There was an explosion in the Al-Ghabawi area in Zarqa,” state television said in a news flash.

Subsequently, a statement from the Jordanian Armed Forces quoted an official military source as saying that “there was an explosion in the early hours of Friday, in one of the ammunition depots that are being dismantled near the city of Zarqa.”

The source confirmed that “the deposits where the explosion occurred are located in an uninhabited area, and a committee has been formed to determine the causes of the explosion.”

The source did not elaborate, but video recordings that were widely shared on social media sites showed a huge fireball rising up into a dark sky, followed by the sound of several explosions.
