US authorities intercepted a package containing a toxin that was sent to President Donald Trump earlier this week, according to CNN news.
According to the news network, the package contained the ricin toxin, which was confirmed to be present in the package after running two tests to confirm the presence of ricin.
All mail from the White House is sorted and scanned at an offsite facility prior to reaching the White House.
The FBI and the Secret Service opened an investigation.
According to the American Wall Street Journal, investigators believe the package was shipped from Canada to the United States.
And the FBI stated that it is not possible to say so far that there is a threat to public safety in the United States.
Ricin is a highly toxic compound extracted from castor beans, which have been used before in a number of terrorist operations.
It can be used in powder, granule or smoke form, and if ingested it causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding in the stomach and intestines, followed by liver, spleen and kidney failure, and death from collapse of the blood circulation.
Previously, the US authorities found at least two packages, suspected of containing ricin, that were destined for the Ministry of Defense.
