Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was transferred to a military hospital in the capital a few days before a referendum was held to amend the constitution.
On Saturday, Tebboune went into voluntary self-isolation for five days, on the advice of his doctors, after several of his aides and government officials tested positive for the Corona virus.
Tebboune’s office said he is in “stable condition” in a specialized unit at a military hospital and continues to do his job.
The presidential statement, broadcast by the official Algerian media, did not specify whether the Tebboune virus test result was positive.
On Saturday, Tebboune, 75, said he was subject to self-isolation after several of his top aides tested positive for the Corona virus. He was quoted saying at the time: “I assure you, my brothers and sisters, that I am in good health and will continue my work.
Tebboune’s hospitalization comes at a delicate time as he sought to turn the page on the mass protests that forced his predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign from power after 20 years.
Tebboune, who was elected in December, has pushed for a new constitution that limits presidential terms and gives more powers to parliament and the judiciary. The new amendments will go to a referendum on Sunday.
The outbreak of the Corona epidemic has negatively affected the Algerian economy, which is already facing several challenges due to declining oil and gas revenues.
The Algerian authorities have officially confirmed that more than 55,000 cases of Coronavirus have been registered, with almost 2,000 deaths.
