A judicial source confirmed the details of the appointment of a new president for the National Electoral Authority, to succeed Foreign Minister Lashin Ibrahim, after his death on Friday morning.
The source, who preferred not to be named, told Masrawy Al-Youm that the Supreme Judicial Council will nominate a deputy of the Court of Cassation to form part of the formation of the National Electoral Commission, as stipulated in the Law of the Commission in 2017.
The source added that the nominated judge, if he is older than the councilor Mahmoud al-Sharif, the current vice president of the National Electoral Commission, will assume the chairmanship of the commission, but if he is more recent than the “honorable” councilor, he will be a deputy of the commission, and “al-Sharif” as its president, according to the text of the law.
The Law of the Council of the National Electoral Authority stipulates that the Board of Directors will be composed of 10 members in equal parts, 2 deputies of the President of the Court of Cassation, 2 Heads of Courts of Appeal, 2 Vice Presidents of the Council of State, 2 Vice Presidents of the State Litigation Authority and 2 deputies of the Administrative Prosecutor’s Office, and half of the members of the Council are delegates every 3 years. The presidency of the commission will be assumed by the vice president of the Court of Cassation, the oldest of the two vice presidents, provided that the second is the commission’s alternate.
This morning, the advisor, “Lashin”, died after being infected by the Corona virus at the age of 64, and several organizations called him, including the Coordinator of the Youth Party.
Councilor Lashin Ibrahim had held the position of head of the National Electoral Commission, during the last years, as the first president of the commission with the objective of preparing it in accordance with the constitution and assuming the supervision of the presidential elections, sheikhs and deputies.
