TikTok is racing against time to stop the spread of a graphic video in the app that shows a man shooting himself with a gun and blocking the accounts of people who re-upload the clip.
The video has rekindled the debate about what social media platforms are doing to reduce the circulation of disruptive material.
TikTok Says: The clip originally streamed on Facebook in late August and appeared on other apps, and a representative for TikTok confirmed that the suicide clip had recently started streaming.
And when the TikTok community found out about the clip, many content creators began posting videos warning their followers not to look for a photo of a man sitting at his desk with a gray beard and long, detached hair from the video.
And other content creators spoke of the most annoying part of the video being hidden within a harmless-looking image.
A spokesperson for the platform said: Our systems automatically detected these videos and reported them for violating our policies against content that promotes, praises, glorifies or promotes suicide.
He added: “We ban accounts that try to download the clip over and over again, and we thank our community members who reported this content and warned others not to watch, interact or share this video on any platform out of respect for the person. and his family”.
These types of videos have appeared on other sites in the past, including Facebook and Instagram.
And since Tik Tok videos appear in a main source, known as the “For You” page, that people are browsing, it can be difficult to avoid shots.
This may explain why the TikTok community is trying to be very careful when warning others about the images in the video.
Warnings also began to appear on Instagram, where the video is circulating, as parents spoke on sites like Twitter about their children who saw the video, and what resulted from that.
A TikTok spokesperson said: “If someone in our community has suicidal thoughts or is feeling anxious about someone, we encourage them to seek support and provide access to hotlines directly from our app and in our Safety Center.
