Villagers visited Yon Alemán’s grave and lit candles after voting ended in local elections on Sunday.
At Alemán’s grave, one of the men whispered: “This is your victory … I know you are proud of us, rest in peace.”
Alemán won a third term as mayor of Devesilo, a town with an estimated population of 3,000 in southern Romania, and won 64% of the vote, data from the election office showed on Monday.
“He was a real mayor … he worked for the town and respected the laws,” a woman wearing a mask told a private television channel in Devisillo. I don’t think we’ll ever see a mayor like him again ”.
Aleman, a former naval officer, turned 57 on Monday and died on September 17 in a hospital in the capital Bucharest.
Officials said his name was printed on the voter cards and could not be removed from them, and that new elections will be held.
Romania has recorded 123,944 COVID-19 cases since the end of February, including 4,748 deaths, the highest death rate on the eastern flank of the European Union.
