In an interview with Sky News to commemorate the victims of the armed conflict, Carter stressed that any escalation of regional tensions or miscalculations can ultimately lead to the outbreak of a large-scale conflict.
The Chief of Staff of the British Army, who has been in office since 2018, said the world has now become a place dominated by great mystery and anxiety, indicating that the escalation of competition in the world has turned into a characteristic of our time.
He continued: “I think the real danger we face is that we are witnessing an escalation that leads to miscalculation in light of the presence of many regional conflicts at the present time.”
In response to a question about whether there is a real risk of a second world war, Carter added: “I say it is one of the dangers and we must be aware of these threats.”
The Chief of Staff of the British Army emphasized the need to preserve the memory of those who have been victims of previous wars, as it is a warning to those who may repeat the mistakes of the past, indicating that forgetting the horrors of past wars can lead to some to believe that fighting wars is a rational decision.
