At least one person has died and 227 people have been hospitalized from an unknown disease in Andhra Pradesh, in southern India.
Doctors said the patients experienced a wide range of symptoms, from nausea to seizures to loss of consciousness.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the disease that swept through the town of Ellero over the weekend.
The new disease comes at a time when India continues to fight the Covid-19 epidemic, as the country has the second highest number of cases of the epidemic in the world.
And it is noteworthy that Andhra Pradesh is considered one of the states of India most affected by the epidemic, with a number of infected people exceeding 800,000.
But it seems that the epidemic is not the reason why these people are hospitalized during the weekend.
State Health Minister Ola Kali Krishna Srinivas said tests performed on patients showed that they did not have COVID-19.
“People who contracted the disease, especially children, suddenly began to vomit after complaining that their eyes hurt,” a medical official from Ellero City Government Hospital told the Indian Express.
“Some people have passed out or have had seizures,” he added.
70 patients have left the hospital, while 157 people are still receiving treatment, authorities said.
The prime minister of the state’s local government, Jakanmohan Reddy, said that specialized medical teams were dispatched to the city of Eluru with the aim of investigating the cause of the mysterious disease.
Reddy is also expected to visit the city to meet the patients and their families.
He added: “We have ruled out water contamination or air pollution as a causative agent of the disease after officials visited areas that witnessed infections among patients.”
“This is a mysterious disease, and only laboratory tests will reveal the nature of the disease,” he said.
The state opposition party, Telego Desam, called for an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, insisting that contamination was the cause of the mysterious disease.
