Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Jaden Ali Obaid Hassan, announced that Khartoum had taken preventive measures to deal with the repercussions of the filling of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
He said at a press conference, reported by “Sky News Arabia”, that “the lack of agreement on the filling and operation of the Renaissance dam has affected electricity generation in Sudan.”
Egypt had confirmed its rejection of Ethiopia’s statements during which it insisted on the second filling of the Renaissance dam, even if no agreement was reached on the rules for filling and operating the dam.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Hafez said in a statement last Thursday that these statements “reveal once again Addis Ababa’s intention and desire to impose a fait accompli on the two downstream countries, which is rejected by Egypt for the threat it poses to the interests of the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples and their influence. “Unilateral actions on security and stability in the region.”
He added: “It is regrettable that Ethiopian officials use the language of sovereignty in their conversations about exploiting the resources of a river that crosses borders. International rivers are jointly owned by the riparian states and it is not allowed to extend sovereignty over. them or try to monopolize them, rather they should use these natural resources to serve the peoples of the countries that share them. Based on the norms of international law, the most important of which are the principles of cooperation, equity and no harm. . “
The spokesperson indicated that these statements were issued at a time when the Republic of the Congo, which assumed the presidency of the African Union, is making appreciated efforts to restart the negotiation process and reach an agreement before the next flood season. ” , reflecting Ethiopia’s lack of political will to negotiate in order to reach an agreement “To resolve the Renaissance dam crisis,” according to the statement.
He reaffirmed to Egypt and Sudan on the importance of the active participation of the international community in the negotiations led and led by the Congo through an international quartet that includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, in order to ensure the effectiveness of the negotiation process and to boost the three countries and help them reach an agreement in the coming months.
Earlier Thursday, Sudan renewed its call to respect the laws on the Renaissance dam archive, considering that Ethiopia’s insistence on the second filling of the dam next July without reaching an agreement, “is an extension of its contrary position. to international law on the use of transboundary water sources, and is incompatible with an agreement. “The Declaration of Principles signed with Cairo and Khartoum in March 2015 regarding the filling and operation of the dam.
