The Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Seleshi Bekele, confirmed on Wednesday that the construction process of the Renaissance dam is at a critical stage and has reached 79%.

He noted that the next rainy season, which runs from July to October, will complete the second filling of the Renaissance dam, stressing that “the second filling period will not be extended in any way.”

This took place within a symposium of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, in an event that marks the next tenth anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the Renaissance Dam, which is celebrated on April 2.

Previously, Ethiopia had reiterated its rejection of the Egyptian-Sudanese proposal regarding the participation of the International Mediation Quartet in the crisis of the Renaissance Dam negotiations in Ethiopia.

A spokesman for Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry, Dunia Mufti, said his country has not yet received any information on the mediation of the quartet requested by Khartoum, indicating his country’s readiness to resume negotiations at any time, adding that the parties must respect African mediation. Union and its role in mediation.

The Mufti added: “We have good relations with the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union and the United States, but our principle remains that the African Union must play its role and, so far, no questions have been raised about the quadripartite agreement between the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union and the United States, on the Renaissance dam ”.

Ethiopian news agency “ENA” quoted “Mufti” as saying: “The proposal from Egypt and Sudan for mediation of the quartet in the Renaissance dam archive has not been formally submitted to your country.”

He stressed that “Ethiopia is always ready to negotiate, but if the negotiations are finished before they are full, Ethiopia will not face any problems.” Regarding the border with Sudan, Mufti said that Addis Ababa is not silent on the border between Ethiopia and Sudan, and that it is working for internal diplomacy.

At the same time, Sudan warned that Ethiopia’s unilateral mobilization of the Renaissance dam would have serious and irreversible consequences, and called on the United Nations and the United States to mediate to resolve the differences.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok made official requests to both Washington and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the African and European Union, asking them to step in to play the role of mediator in the Renaissance dam negotiations. and Hamdok believed that the current negotiation approach led to the failure to reach a legal and binding agreement between the three parties during the last negotiation period.

Speaking during Hamdok’s visit to Cairo, Dr. Mustafa Madbouly indicated that this archive is of interest to the leaders and people of Egypt and Sudan, noting the continued emphasis on the constants in this archive, which are based on the preservation of the historical rights and interests of the two countries, in a way that does not harm the interests of the brothers in Ethiopia Highlighting: This is our policy and constants. We are not against development in Ethiopia. We support it, but in a way that does not harm the interests of the people of Egypt and Sudan.

Dr. Mustafa Madbouly said: We express our concern about Ethiopia’s intention to proceed with the filling of the Renaissance Dam reservoir for the second year in a row, without coordination with the downstream countries of Egypt and Sudan, and affirm our enthusiasm to complete the coordination. and cooperation among all of us on this important issue, and we hope that our brothers will respond in Ethiopia in the next period, to reach a consensual path and a decisive solution to this issue, in a way that achieves the interests of the three peoples. We are confident and certain that this river that connects the three countries can extend the hands of prosperity, development and progress to all peoples, in a way that does not harm the interests of any people.
