The Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army, Miguel Ángel Villaroya, announced his resignation from his position, following reports that he had used his powers to try to obtain a vaccine against the Coronavirus before his turn.
Villaroya said that he had never tried to achieve anything other than his right, adding that he was resigning from his position to preserve the reputation of the Spanish army and its image in the minds of citizens.
The Spanish Defense Minister announced the opening of an investigation into the accusations directed against Viaroya and several senior army commanders of obtaining the Corona vaccine before the time specified for them, according to the system announced for the organization of groups eligible for the vaccine. .
Press reports revealed that Viaroya and others received the vaccine in the first phase, which was intended for medical personnel and the elderly residing in health care homes.
In a statement quoted by him, the 63-year-old general said: “I never planned to obtain benefits that were not my right.”
However, the Spanish press and media treated the incident as a political scandal for the military.
Senior sources told AFP that the defense minister accepted and approved the resignation.
The resignation came a day after the Spanish Interior announced the dismissal of a prominent civil defense official after receiving the vaccine, without being on the emergency list to receive the vaccine.
The Spanish media accused several members of the Army General Staff of getting vaccinated without waiting their turn, highlighting that there are many generals who will soon announce their resignation.
Several political figures in the country also resigned for the same reason, which was explained by the Mallorca health councilor, while Javier Guerrimon, the health councilor for the city of Ceuta, refused to resign after it was revealed that he had received the vaccine without waiting his turn.
