The Sudanese negotiating team for the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, led by Dr. Yasser Abbas, Sudan’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, held a bilateral meeting on Saturday with the African Union team of experts.

The Sudanese News Agency stated on Saturday that the meeting came in response to Sudan’s call to give African Union experts a greater role in facilitating negotiations between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia, with the aim of contribute to the preparation of a second draft of the proposed memorandum of understanding that the three countries received at the previous six-day meeting on January 3, which takes into account the comments of all parties.

The meeting widely discussed the need to develop a clear framework for the role of African Union experts, and Sudan highlighted the need for the African Union to play a more effective leadership and proactive role in the negotiations than its role during previous negotiating rounds.

The meeting reviewed Sudan’s views on the need to link the agreement being negotiated and include clear mechanisms to resolve potential conflicts.

The Sudanese delegation affirmed its firm refusal to divide the agreement into stages for first filling and permanent operation as two separate agreements, and called for a single comprehensive agreement to be reached that addresses all issues related to the Renaissance dam.
