Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had summoned the Ethiopian Chargé d’Affaires to Cairo on Wednesday to provide clarification on the remarks attributed to the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

The ministry added, without details, that these statements affect Egypt’s internal affairs.

The statement read: “Tonight, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Ethiopian Chargé d’Affaires to Cairo to provide clarification on the statements transmitted by the spokesperson of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which he addresses the internal affairs of Egypt”.

It was not clear what statements enraged Egypt.

And the media reported earlier in the day that Dina Mufti, a spokesperson for the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, attacked Cairo for criticizing the Renaissance dam project Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile, saying that he was using the project as an excuse to cover up many internal problems.

Negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have so far failed to resolve a bitter dispute between the three countries over the filling and operation of the dam, even after filling of the reservoir behind the dam began in July.

Egypt fears that the dam, which costs several billion dollars to build, will affect its water share.
