Dr. Gad El-Qady, president of the National Institute of Astronomical and Geophysical Research, stated that among the scientific and social activities carried out by the institute, is the preparation of astronomical calculations, including the births of newborns, the location of bodies celestial and their conditions of presence on the sky page. Among those phenomena, the conjunction of some bodies with each other, such as the conjunction of Jupiter with Saturn, two of the largest planets in the solar system called the great conjunction.

The judge revealed that the great conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn began days ago and reaches its climax on Monday, December 21, after sunset at sunset and at the beginning of the night, coinciding with the winter solstice – in the northern hemisphere, where its proximity at a distance of less than 0.1 degrees of arc will surpass the brightest stars in the sky in those Tonight, said Dr. Osama Rahma, director of the Institute’s Solar Research Laboratory.

He stressed that the scene will be remarkable from December 17, when Saturn is to the left of Jupiter until its full conjunction on December 21, where they will exchange their places in the sky so that Jupiter is to the left of Saturn, and then continue their gradual departure from each other, which will be noticed from December 25 until the end of the year, until their separation becomes apparent.

Observers, who are hobbyists and interested, can see the coupling with the naked eye, and there is no danger of that, except that looking through the telescope will be able to see the four great moons of Jupiter (Europa – Io – Callisto – Ganymede) .

It should be noted that this conjunction repeats every 20 years, since the last conjunction was in May 2000, but the coupling was not that close to Earth except for 800 years, and this is what he called this astronomical event rare.

The institute warned against being guided by the words of astrologers who will abound about this event and what will follow in terms of expectations as a kind of signs or the like, emphasizing that they should not be listened to at all, since astrology is not more than a trade that relies on presumptive concepts to obtain the unknown.

Al-Qadi said: “Astrology is a subject that is not liked in religion and is rejected by society, so do not let anything disturb your ranks or miss the opportunity to enjoy the amazing beauty of seeing these heavenly bodies in their beautiful shape on the page of heaven. “

The judge revealed that the institute, represented in the astronomy and sun and space research departments, will host an astronomical evening at the institute’s headquarters in Helwan, with a talk introducing this event and answering any questions about this connection, then monitoring and visualizing the conjunction with special telescopes that are operated by specialists from the institute, and a live broadcast will be presented. On the institute’s page to monitor the phenomenon and to allow the greatest number of citizens to follow the phenomenon.

It is also worth noting that the same day that coincides with the time of the winter solstice on December 21, which means the longest night and the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day and night more short in the southern hemisphere.

The institute calls on all participants to adhere to precautionary measures, concluding: “With our wishes for a pleasant view of the astronomical phenomenon and a period of health and safety for all.”
