General Angus Campbell, Commander of the Australian Defense Forces
The Australian military chief stressed the need for defense forces to “acknowledge” a recently released report on crimes committed by soldiers in Afghanistan and vowed to make changes to ensure that atrocities are not repeated.
This report was published last Thursday after an investigation into the conduct of Special Forces personnel in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016 and concluded that the leaders of the commands forced young soldiers to kill unarmed prisoners to get used to killing.

On Sunday, Gen. Angus Campbell, commander of the defense forces, said he would be responsible for ensuring that the report is handled accurately, in addition to fulfilling his duty and performance as a commander in the Middle East in 2011.
He said: “I want the Australian Defense Force to recognize that this is something that we have to acknowledge because if we don’t approve it, we won’t fix it and if we don’t fix it this terrible thing could happen again and I can’t accept that.”
The report recommended referring 19 current and former soldiers to possible trial, and has sparked shame and anger in Australia, which often features much of its military history.
