In the early hours of Monday morning, official Syrian television announced the death of Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, who strongly supported President Bashar al-Assad’s campaign against the protesters, sparking the ongoing conflict. It has been developing for about 10 years.

No details were available on the cause of death, but the 79-year-old has been worsening his health for years due to heart problems.

Al-Muallem was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2006 and also served as Deputy Prime Minister.

The veteran diplomat saw his country turn more towards Iran and Russia, consolidating Assad’s rule and allowing him to regain most of the territory captured by the opposition.

The civil war in Syria broke out about 10 years ago after Assad launched an offensive in 2011 against protesters demanding an end to his family’s rule.

Al-Muallem accused Washington and the West of stoking unrest in his country, describing the armed opposition as “terrorists” in a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and pushed millions of people to seek refuge in other countries.
