Bahrain’s Royal Court announced on Wednesday the death of Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa at the age of 84.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa is the first and only head of government since the establishment of Bahrain as a state and later as a kingdom, and the longest term in history.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa is considered the longest term prime minister in history, having served 50 years and 296 days, surpassing Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen, who served for 35 years and 301 days.

Sheikh Khalifa was born on November 24, 1935, and was the second son of Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain at the time, as his first son was Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa (father of the Bahraini monarch Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa).

He joined a public school before being sent in 1957 to study intermittently in Britain until 1959.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa was appointed Prime Minister after the so-called “Council of State” (which he had presided over since January 1970) became the “Council of Ministers” following the establishment of the State of Bahrain in 1971 after he was an emirate before that, and became its Emir. It is Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who was previously called “ruler”.

Sheikh Khalifa remained as Prime Minister of Bahrain from 1971 until his death on November 11, 2020.
