Steven Gerrard, the Glasgow Rangers coach and Liverpool legend, expressed his great happiness with Mohamed Salah matching his European number with the Reds.
Salah scored his 21st goal for Liverpool in the Champions League against Atalanta, equaling Gerrard’s number of goals to more than one for the Reds in European competition, not counting the goals scored in the round of 16.
“The numbers are made to be broken. I was very proud when I saw Salah match my record with Liverpool in Europe, it was only a matter of time,” Gerrard said in remarks published by the Scottish Herald.
He added: “I think he will exceed my number, and I hope he will.”
He continued: “Mohamed Salah and Alfredo Morelos (Rangers forward) share their constant desire to score goals, but my league in Liverpool was a little different than that.”
“There is nothing better than seeing someone break a record,” he concluded.
In total, Salah reached his 24th goal in the Champions League (21 with Liverpool, 2 with Basel, 1 with Roma) to equal the number of goals of: Luis Figo, Giovanni Elber, Gonzalo Iguain, Marco Simone, Paul Scholes, José Augusto and José Altafini.
