Two people were killed after men armed with rifles opened fire at six different locations in the center of the Austrian capital Vienna on Monday night.
The police shot one of the attackers and arrested another. At least one attacker continues to flee. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described the incident as a “heinous terrorist attack.”
The attack occurred just hours before Austria imposed new restrictions to try to curb the increase in coronavirus cases.
Many people enjoyed bars and restaurants that will be closed until the end of November under the new restrictions.
It was not immediately clear how many of the attackers participated in the shooting.
Police said the attack started near Vienna’s main synagogue, but it was unclear whether the target was the synagogue.
The authorities set up barricades in the center of Vienna. A large number of police officers were seen near the famous Vienna State Opera.
Austrian Interior Minister Karl Niehammer said: “It is the most difficult day for Austria in many years. We are dealing with a terrorist attack, the intensity of which has not been witnessed for a long time in Austria.”
