Benfica coach Jorge Jesús refused to compare his team’s performance with that of Barcelona because he believed that “the Catalan team has not done anything yet.”
Moroccan Mehdi Carcella, a Belgian Standard League player, compared Benfica’s performance after the two teams met in the European League with Barcelona’s performance after the Portuguese team won 3-0.
The former Benfica player told “Sport TV” after the game: “With Betzi and Adel Taarabt, Benfica is like Barcelona.”
On the other hand, that comparison was not a source of pride for the Portuguese coach, who said: “I will not say that now we are like Barcelona, and I don’t want to look like them now.”
“Of course I want to be like the team that played for years, but the current team did nothing,” he added.
“I don’t want to look like another team now, but I don’t care about the others,” he said.
Benfica is at the top of the Portuguese league standings with 15 points from 5 games, two points behind Sporting Lisbon.
They also top their group ranking in the European League after two victories.
Jesús’ team has not lost since mid-September, when they lost the Champions League group stage qualifying game to PAOK.
Jesús returned to coach Benfica after an exciting experience with Brazilian Flamengo that ended with the crowning of 6 titles in one season.
