Manuel José, the coach who created the best era in Al-Ahly history, sent a message to the team’s players before they compete for the final of the African Champions League.
José congratulated Mahmoud Al-Khatib, president of Al-Ahly, on his birthday in a video broadcast by the club’s account on social media.
The Portuguese told the players: “I wish you good luck. Al-Ahly have been absent from the final for years.”
He added: “Al-Ahly plays the final to win. Anxiety is normal before the game, but once the match starts, trust that you are the best, better than your opponent.”
He concluded: “You must play as a team.”
Al-Ahly, the Champions League record holder to crown with 8 titles, is preparing to compete in the Champions League final in Egypt against Zamalek or Raja.
Al-Ahly won four Champions League titles under veteran Jose’s leadership, in 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2008.
Al-Ahly skipped the Moroccan Wydad in the semi-finals and is waiting for the African Football Confederation (CAF) to determine the date of the final match.
Al-Ahly’s last championship dates back to 2013, after which the team reached the final twice, but lost in 2017 and 2018.
