Hacking in Wisconsin reportedly targeted vendor bills
The Wisconsin Republican Party said hackers stole $ 2.3 million from a campaign supporting the reelection of President Donald Trump.
Andrew Heat, the head of the state party, said in a statement Thursday that the party had contacted the FBI and that agents were investigating the case.
Hitt added that the pirates manipulated the campaign tickets to steal the money.
Wisconsin is seen as a key state in winning the upcoming presidential election, which Trump narrowly won in 2016.
Heet said the party’s invoices to suppliers had been tampered with.
He indicated that it appeared to be a scam attempt. A party spokesman said it appeared that no data had been stolen.
The money was stolen from the Republican Party’s federal account in Wisconsin.
Heet said state officials were warned of such cyberattacks at the party’s national conference last August.
The reported hacking comes as Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, make one last attempt this week to secure a victory in Wisconsin before Election Day.
An Associated Press spokeswoman said there were hundreds of attempted attacks on the pro-Democratic campaign in Wisconsin.
Trump won Wisconsin with fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016. Recent polls have consistently shown a tough race, with Biden generally at the top.
